The impact of trauma on the child

Duration: 1 hour

This foundation-level course is designed to increase understandings of trauma in children. It is for all professionals, volunteers, families, carers and community workers who work with, or care for, children. The course briefly introduces a trauma-informed approach to interacting with and supporting children and families who have experienced trauma and adversity.

Supporting children who have experienced trauma

Duration: 3–4 hours

This course uses trauma-informed practice to study the explicit detail and skills of therapeutic engagement. It includes strategies for working with children who may be reluctant to engage, identifying children’s resilience and strengths, and helping children to move past feelings of self-blame and hopelessness.

This course is designed for practitioners who work specifically with children who have experienced trauma. This includes GPs, paediatricians, psychiatrists, psychologists, allied health professionals, child protection workers, social workers, child mental health practitioners, and specialist counsellors.

Supporting children who disclose trauma

Duration: 3 hours

This course examines practice strategies for supporting children who have either directly disclosed or who are known to have experienced trauma or abuse. They can help children to move away from the feelings of self-blame and shame associated with these experiences.

This course is designed for practitioners who work specifically with children who are known to have experienced trauma or are likely to disclose trauma. This includes professionals who may receive referrals for support, such as paediatricians, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, child mental health practitioners and specialist counsellors. It also includes GPs, allied health professionals and child protection workers.
